Massage

MassageIn several studies, massage has been shown to improve quality of life and well-being. There is some scientific evidence that massage enhances the immune system by increasing blood circulation. Massage has been demonstrated to promote relaxation and ease pain and anxiety in cancer patients.

Massage promotes muscle relaxation and stress reduction and can relieve headaches, backaches, joint pain, stiffness and insomnia. It can enhance blood flow, stimulate lymph circulation, and improve circulation.

Massage should be avoided immediately following surgery, and over areas of known tumors. In some circumstances, it should also not be provided on the same day that patients receive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Patients with circulatory ailments such as phlebitis or varicose veins should avoid massage. Massage should never be performed on bruises, areas of tissue damage and inflamed or infected sites.

Massage therapy should be used with, not in place of, standard cancer therapy.

At the Dempsey Center, licensed massage therapists provide massage therapy to CMMC cancer patients and their direct primary caregivers. Hours vary and appointments are required.
