Acupuncture

Acupuncture"Acupuncture" describes a group of procedures that stimulate anatomical points on the body using a variety of techniques -- the most widely recognized and scientifically studied in the United States being the penetration of the skin with thin, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Practiced in various Asian countries for thousands of years, acupuncture is one of the key components of traditional Chinese medicine. American practices of acupuncture use medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea and other countries.

Research has shown that acupuncture reduces nausea and vomiting after surgery and chemotherapy. It can also relieve pain. Researchers don't fully understand how acupuncture works. Some believe it stimulates the body's to produce its own pain-killing substances. Others think it might affect the release of chemicals that regulate blood pressure and flow.

In recent years, several healthcare providers who practice acupuncture have joined the Central Maine Medical Center Medical Staff or Associated Professional Staff. Anyone living with cancer who would like to learn more about acupuncture services in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area may call The Dempsey Center at 795-8250 for more information or discuss the matter with their doctor.
