Volunteer at the Dempsey Center

Volunteers
Two of the smiling faces you'll see at the Dempsey Center: Priscilla Lavoie, a two-time cancer survivor and the longest tenured PDC volunteer with her husband, caregiver and fellow PDC volunteer, Richard.

Volunteers enrich and strengthen the services offered at The Dempsey Center. We consider volunteers to be our greatest resource and we have many opportunities available!

Please read the following role descriptions and complete the form below. You will hear back from our Volunteer Coordinator within one week.

Workshop Presenter
Do you have a skill or hobby that you would like to share with others?  Many of our workshops and classes are led by volunteer instructors!  Programs are diverse and range from programs on coping with cancer to learning skills such as jewelry making/beading; scrap-booking sessions; and belly dancing.

Program Proctor
Program Proctors have a particularly fun job - attending workshops and programs as a volunteer service!  Proctors assist with room set up for workshops, introduce our guest speakers, pass out and collect evaluations, and then clean up and reset the room after each program.

Clerical Duties
Volunteers help with day-to-day Center operations.  Responsibilities include answering telephones; greeting visitors; making appointment reminder calls to patients; and distributing Dempsey Center newsletters, flyers and knitted and sewn items in hospital departments where cancer patients are being cared for.

Maine Buddy
The Patrick Dempsey Center is pleased to collaborate with the Cancer Community Center to offer training sessions for the Maine Buddy Program.  Maine Buddies are cancer survivors, co-survivors (partners, parents, etc.) and those who have lost a loved one to cancer, and who are ready to offer their experience to assist others who are newly diagnosed or who have recently suffered a loss.  For more information about the Maine Buddy Program, contact Jani Druck at (207) 774-2200 or email jani@cancercommunitycenter.org

Dempsey Center Ambassador
Ambassadors meet with cancer patients, caregivers, and Center visitors to talk about the programs and services of The Patrick Dempsey Center, helping match individuals to programs that will best meet their needs.  This position requires attending a Maine Buddy Training program at the Center before starting.

Knitting and Crocheting
Join one of our knitting/crocheting circles to create lap blankets, hats, prayer shawls, and other items that will be donated to cancer patients.

Sewing
Join our monthly sewing circle to create sewn items for cancer patients.  Items include comfort packs, “Hearts of Love” pillows, “Ports of Love” portacath protectors, sewn hats, and lap quilts.

Card Making
Love to scrap and/or stamp?  Please join our monthly Caring Cards group to create uplifting note cards for cancer patients.

Reiki
Volunteer Reiki practitioners (must have completed training) provide free reiki sessions to cancer patients & caregivers several days a week in the Center, and we are always looking to expand our volunteer pool.  Our reiki volunteers are overseen by an experienced RN & Reiki Master, Meredith Kendall.

Massage Therapy
We utilize volunteer Licensed Massage Therapists at events such as The Dempsey Challenge and our "Day of Pampering" sessions.
