Kate Beever

The 24-year-old Cornish resident contacted the Dempsey Center about volunteering her talents throughout the summer. Beever’s chosen field has been shown to manage stress, improve communication, alleviate pain and counteract depression.

In addition to leading a weekly drumming group for cancer patients, Kate would sing to patients in the doorway of their room or encourage them to participate by singing along or playing a variety of instruments she provided. Feedback from the patients was universally positive. One patient noted that her “stress just melted away” when Kate began to play for her.

Betty, who has been knitting since she was a small child, looks at her volunteer service as “the most rewarding thing” she does. Larry Mayes

I am Larry Mayes, a retired Navy Hospital Corpsman/ Vietnam veteran, Biomedical Equipment Technician and Ohmeda Anesthesia Service Technician. I am also a former Analyst and Electron Microscope/ Engineering Technician at National Semiconductor in South Portland. I am a six-year Testicular Cancer survivor who also lost my sister to Breast Cancer on an Easter Sunday morning, three years ago.

When I began repairing medical equipment, I adopted the philosophy that I was assisting the healthcare team with each patient. When I began cancer treatment, I was humbled by the thought that every nurse, doctor, medical assistant, receptionist, etc who cared for me throughout my 9 month course of treatment was returning to me far beyond the contributions I made to the care of other over twenty years. I also hoped that my care to others had benefited others in the same way I had. The devotion of these professionals at all levels has enabled me to enjoy laughter, friendship, family and grandchildren and continue learning to play the violin on my own since age 50. Someone once said, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away!”. If you can’t look at the clouds in the sky and marvel at the beauty of what God does to color our world with just water vapor and light, then you need to pause and take another look!

After 21 years in banking, Nancy has been enjoying her retirement which began in June, 2008. For many years she taught a variety of crafts and fiber arts and is now sharing her love of rubber stamping as a Stampin’ Up demonstrator.
