Grants Assistant Volunteer (Non-Client Facing Position)

POSITION: Grants Assistant Volunteer
DEPARTMENT: Advancement
REPORTS TO: Grants Lead

Schedule and Hours: Weekly or bi-weekly; 4-6 hours a shift (open to 3-hour shift)

Position Summary 

The Grants Assistant Volunteer helps with the functions of the grants team within the Advancement department of the Dempsey Center. The volunteer in this role will assist the Grants Lead with grant application preparation and research of new foundation and corporate prospect to further advance the mission of the Dempsey Center.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Researching grant opportunities
  • Preparing brief, preliminary foundation profiles for organizations that seem aligned with the Dempsey Center
  • Preparing templates for application forms, grant reports and supplemental materials
    • Copying grant applications and report forms into the appropriate Microsoft Word format
    • Checking that all application and report questions have been copied over including sub questions, dropdown, multiple choice questions, etc.


  • Familiarity with nonprofits and goals of fundraising preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and it’s formatting
  • Proficiency with internet research
  • Familiarity with completing applications
  • Experience proofreading preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work independently and follow instructions
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Reliable attendance
  • Empathic and caring, open minded, dependable with a healthy sense of humor always appreciated
  • Demonstrates Dempsey Center core values and displays a passion for the Center’s mission to make life better for people impacted by cancer

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for duration of shift (up to 6 hours)
  • Ability to type for duration of shift (up to 6 hours)

General Requirements:

  • Must attend Dempsey Experience Training.
  • Maintains professional behavior, dress, and appearance at all times while volunteering.
  • Must use discretion and protect the confidentiality of all Dempsey Center clients.; HIPAA-specific training will be provided.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, Board members, donors, prospects, volunteers, consultants, advisors, and members of the community.

Required for all Volunteers: 

  • Background check
  • Annual flu immunization or declination notice
