Reiki Volunteer (Client Facing Position)

Reports to: Director of Integrative Therapies  
Department: Client Care
Schedule and Hours Required: Schedule varies; approximately 3 – 5 hours/per week
Position Location: Dempsey Center – Lewiston, Maine

The Reiki Volunteer offers Reiki to clients of the Dempsey Center, to promote relaxation, better sleep, and to reduce anxiety and stress. During a session, the Reiki Volunteer will use standard and accepted Reiki hand positions to focus on different parts of the client’s body.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Prepare the room and massage table for service. Place a clean sheet on the table, adjust table to correct height, soften lighting and cue music if any.
• Greet client, explain Reiki and its benefits, and what to expect during the session
• Provide Reiki session for 35 – 40 minutes
• Wrap-up client session: offer water, assist with safe transfer from massage table (if applicable), check in with client about effect of session. Invite client to return, if appropriate.
• Clean treatment room, change all linens that have contacted client during session. Dispose of used linens in appropriate and designated receptacles.
• Complete Reiki Documentation form after each session. File Documentation Forms in Reiki file cabinet. Shred daily schedule with client information at the end of shift.
• Log volunteer hours.
• Attend Reiki Volunteer meetings.

Skills and Experience:

• Practice a calm, confident, friendly demeanor, creating a safe environment for the client.
• Demonstrated empathy and compassion to those impacted by cancer.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to listen attentively without judgment.
• Demonstrated professional boundaries to include refraining from offering professional or personal advice outside of the Reiki Volunteer scope of work.
• Comfortable in a patient care-oriented environment.
• Ability to understand and strictly adhere to guidelines of confidentiality and client privacy, both inside and outside the Dempsey Center.
• Practice all aspects of client safety.

Education or Certifications:
• Must hold certifications at a Master’s Level.
• Must practice Reiki on a regular basis.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and/or sit for periods of up to 4 hours.
• Ability to lift 25 pounds.

Other Requirements:
• Must attend Dempsey Experience Training
• Maintains professional behavior, dress and appearance at all times while volunteering
• Must use discretion and take confidentiality seriously; HIPAA-specific training will be provided.

Required for All Volunteers:

• Background check
• Annual Influenza Immunization or Declination Notice
• COVID-19 vaccination
