What is oncology counseling?

Oncology counseling is a specialized form of counseling that focuses on supporting individuals who are diagnosed with cancer, their families and care partners, or those who have experienced the cancer-related death of a loved one.

Oncology counseling is designed to provide emotional support to help people cope with the impact of a cancer diagnosis or loss. In counseling, topics discussed can include coping with cancer related distress, fear of recurrence, managing uncertainty, anticipatory grief, navigating difficult conversations with loved ones and the impact on one’s normal roles and relationships.

Oncology Counselors may teach client strategies to enhance coping and reduce stress, manage the impact of cancer on relationships, sexual health and intimacy, and navigate different stages of a cancer impact. Oncology Counselors may also help clients to explore their feelings about mortality, loss and grief.

The Dempsey Center can offer up to ten individual counseling sessions, if needed, per impact.
