Hours: 36-40 hours/week; some evenings and weekends
Location: South Portland and Lewiston, ME
Responsible for supporting the Dempsey Center mission, vision, values, and work culture.
The clinician in this position will provide counseling, information, referrals and education to people of all ages whose lives are impacted by cancer, including cancer patients/survivors, loved ones, care partners, parents/guardians and bereaved individuals. In order to help maintain or improve quality of life, the primary clinical focus of the clinician includes fostering coping and adaptation to cancer and its effects. The role also leads cancer and bereavement support groups and skill building workshops. The clinician will also provide education and consultation to professionals and staff regarding the biopsychosocial, environmental, spiritual, and cultural factors affecting cancer care. Position requires some evening hours and an occasional Saturday.
Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes
Supports coping and resiliency in Dempsey Center clients through direct service by:
- Providing individual, family, and couples counseling around managing the impact of cancer.
- Facilitating cancer and bereavement support groups.
- Facilitating programs (workshops and classes) related to the psychosocial impact of cancer
Supports provision of direct service and operations by performing the following administrative/non-direct service tasks:
- Clinical documentation
- Attendance and participation at staff meetings, team meetings, and committee meetings
- Program planning
- Professional development
- Other projects as assigned
Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement by:
- Actively participating in supervision with direct supervisor; and
- Achieving personal and professional goals as determined each year.
- Master of Social Work degree required.
- Minimum of two years’ experience required.
- Clinical experience preferably in oncology, palliative, care, and/or hospice. Individual and group counseling experience are required. Experience working with youth.

Licensure, Registration, and Certification
- Valid Maine driver’s license is required.
- Maine LCSW or LMSW-CC license required; OSWC strongly preferred
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to effectively communicate with employees, clients, Board members, donors and potential donors, volunteers, consultants, advisors, and members of the community.
Requires intermediate or better proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 including Word, Excel and Outlook, or equivalent.

- Must be able to exert moderate physical effort with occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, typing and frequently lift and carry material weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Normal office conditions such as sitting, with occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, typing and lifting up to 10 pounds.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting objects weighing as much as 25 pounds, bending, stooping and reaching.
- Driving may be necessary to attend meetings and trainings but is not a primarily and essential job responsibility.
- Internal departments and staff with whom this position must maintain relationships to complete position responsibilities: front office staff, psychosocial team members, programs team, volunteers and volunteer group facilitators.
- List external contacts and clients that this position must develop and maintain relationships to complete position responsibilities: Local mental health providers as needed. Legacy and Life Reflections Program volunteers.
- Work will be performed in the Lewiston Dempsey Center, South Portland Dempsey Center, and remotely. Will include the use of private counseling space to provide direct service; use of group counseling space for groups, potential for offsite programs and strenuous physical activity related to youth/family programing (ie: hiking, camping, paddling, etc), use of VDT in order to complete clinical documentation and other work assignments.
