Wellness For Life

The transition from illness and treatment to survivorship can be a challenge for many cancer patients. Wellness for Life is a survivorship program designed to help people live beyond their cancer diagnosis, recover from their illness and enhance their physical, emotional and social well-being.

Intro to Wellness for Life

The goals of this program are to address some of the common issues cancer survivors may face after treatment ends including fatigue, motivation to move more and return to daily activities, stress management, and the need for support from others who have shared their experience.

Enrollment in the program begins by making an appointment for a Wellness for Life consultation at the Dempsey Center. Our certified cancer exercise specialist will provide an overview of all of our wellness and fitness options and help design a customized wellness plan for you.

Our goal is to help you meet your personal and changing wellness and fitness goals. We have a variety of programs and partnerships that can help you on your way, as well as additional referrals we can make to support your journey.

Eligibility Guidelines

Who is eligible for the free health and fitness center membership?
Cancer survivors who are within two years of their cancer diagnosis are eligible for the full program, and their primary caregiver is eligible for a discounted fitness membership.

How long does the free membership last?
Three months, with an opportunity for an extension of up to 6 months. At the end of a three-month period, if the membership was utilized and beneficial, the Dempsey Center will extend the free membership for an additional three months, for a maximum of 6 months.

How do I join?
1. Make an appointment for a Wellness for Life consultation at the Dempsey Center to receive an overview of all our exercise and fitness options.
2. Complete the membership application and medical history, and provide it to the Dempsey Center Wellness Specialist during, or after, your consultation.
3. The Dempsey Center will forward the application to the appropriate fitness center.

Do I need a physician clearance to join?
Fitness center staff will send a request to the applicant’s medical oncologist and/or primary care physician to sign an Exercise Clearance Form before membership is activated.

How soon can I begin using the fitness center after I complete the application?
Once the fitness center receives the clearance from the physician, the fitness center notifies the client and schedules an initial visit, which includes development of a personalized exercise program, information on program offerings available to W4L members, and an orientation to the fitness center.

How often can I use the fitness center?
Once orientation is complete you are able to utilize the facility as much as you would like during operating hours, and we encourage the use of the fitness center on a regular basis. In order to keep membership active, while payments are being made by the Dempsey Center’s Wellness for Life program, we STRONGLY encourage facility usage at least twice weekly, with a minimum of eight times per month. If you are unable to utilize the facility (medical reasons, extenuating circumstances) we ask that you notify the designated point person and put your membership on hold and, if possible, a date of return.
